The Pagosa Play Place is the response of local mothers and business women to the lack of stimulating, safe, clean, and climate controlled indoor play areas and enrichment classes for children in our community. Children need to be exposed to parallel and group play and physical challenges to maximize their gross motor skills, cognitive development, and emotional maturity. Our 501(c)3 nonprofit organization provides engaging indoor play equipment, infant toys for motor development, and music, art, story time, science discovery, and cultural events. In addition, our space also serves as a collaborative space between community services and other nonprofits – for instance – it is the only available safe, engaging, indoor space in the county for supervised visitations.Our Pagosa Springs and Archuleta County young families are struggling in the face of a childcare shortage and an increasingly challenging employment climate due to the pandemic. Now, more than ever before, the scarcity of opportunities for stay at home or single parents to find financial independence in our community concerns Pagosa Play Place leadership greatly. We continue to focus our support on parents and caregivers tasked with navigating new remote work situations and a lack of childcare availability (and affordability), and have incorporated a parent workstation into the play area. We hope that through offering a fun place for children to play, and space for caregivers to work, we can help families get back on their feet – or at least relieve some stress from remote working and homeschooling. Covid-19 has formed chasms from the cracks in our social and economical support networks and services for our local families trying to better themselves. Pagosa Play Place is a small bridge to help young families overcome these growing challenges.
Through a large donation from Team Pagosa Realty, we’ve been able to hire a staff attendant to ensure our doors stay open through the pandemic. Leadership is now focused on strategy and planning for a thriving future. By the end of 2021, we hope to have the resources in place to extend hours, have a broad enrichment program, increase our non-profit collaboration, and offer more free services and classes to the public. The Pagosa Play Place wants to become a lasting cornerstone for young families in our community to rely on.
